Importance of Exercise

Regular exercise is an important part of being as healthy as you can be. More and more research is showing that exercise can reduce the risk of breast cancer coming back (recurrence) if you’ve been diagnosed, as well as reducing the risk of developing breast cancer if you’ve never been diagnosed.

Previous Exercise Advice

Prior to Pink Ribbon Program there was no specific program for breast cancer patients that filled the void between surgery and recovery. The most common advice from the medical community was rest. However, recent studies correlate a link between moderate physical exercise and improved quality of life for breast cancer survivors.

Common Side Effects of Breast Cancer

Some common side effects after breast cancer surgeries, treatments and reconstruction may include pain, decreased shoulder strength, loss of range of motion, lymphedema, depression, fatigue, and nausea during chemotherapy.

What & Why Pilates?

Pilates, itself, originated as a rehabilitation program. Based on its principles of proper alignment, stabilization, correct posture, improving flexibility and full range of motion without stressing the joints of the body, I believe it is a perfect fit for the rehabilitation of breast cancer patients.

How Breast Cancer Can Affect A Woman

The diagnosis of any type of cancer is life changing, which can affect a woman’s self-esteem. Unlike other cancers, breast cancer carries with it the physical alteration of a woman’s body. When breasts are altered, through a lumpectomy, or removed through a mastectomy, the way we view our own body and the way others view us could change. At Pink Ribbon Rehab we are dedicated to helping women embrace life; promoting a healthy lifestyle and positive body image to all breast cancer patients and survivors. The Pink Ribbon Rehab program is suitable whether your surgery was recent or several years ago and accommodates all fitness levels.
